Whether it's smoked or eaten in edibles, hash oil offers a 'high' like no other. Even before marijuana became legal (only in the states of Colorado and Washington), weed lovers everywhere have been using and/or making their own hash oil for various reasons.
For newbies, 'hash oil' or 'honey oil', is a potent form of cannabis that in most cases have about 80% of THC content. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main chemical compound in marijuana. It's the substance responsible for euphoria when smoking weed. These days, it's more commonly referred to as 'dabs' because you only need a dab to obtain your high. Yes, it's that powerful.
By now, you're probably tempted to go out there and make your own honey oil. But be warned: even if using or cooking it is not illegal, the production of hash oil requires the use of flammable solvents that makes it hazardous. Still, if you're a true blue weed enthusiast, here's an easy way to create your own little dab of gold.
1. Use The Best Weed
Only properly dried and cured marijuana buds, leaves and stalks can be used. For the best results, use only buds. You can get this from your own pot garden (if you have one), buy them in authorized pot stores, or from a friend. Remember not to grind or chop! Just an ounce of weed would do, but you can always add more if you want (keep it under 4 ounces).
2. Get A Solvent
The easiest solvent to use in this case is 99% isopropyl alcohol. Use a half liter of alcohol for an ounce of weed.
3. Prepare Your Equipment.
You will need clean plastic jugs (milk jugs and soda bottles work well). Don't wash them with soap or cleansers; just hot water will do. You will also need plastic tubing, a freezer, a cheap pressure cooker with a tight lid, coffee filters, electric frying pan, and a small glass pane for drying.
4. Place Your Weed and Alcohol In The Freezer Separately.
5. Rinse Your Weed.
Make sure both the solvent and your pot are super cold (but not frozen). Do a quick rinse of the marijuana with the alcohol. Do this thrice until the liquid mixture is golden brown or yellowish in color.
6. Filter Your Mixture.
Strain the mixture you just made through a funnel lined with coffee filters. This should clear any sediments. Do this until you are left with a clear, brownish or yellowish liquid. Never filter in the sink!
7. Allow To Cool To Room Temperature.
8. Cook The Liquid Mixture OUTDOORS.
Put your marijuana mixture inside the pressure cooker. Attach the plastic tubing on the lid, making sure it's sealed tight. Fill the electric frying pan with water and place the pressure cooker on top of it. Extend the plastic tubing to a collection jug BUT don't let it inside.
**The hot water will evaporate the alcohol content; leaving only pure THC. By using a pressure cooker, you can recycle your alcohol for later use.**
9. Cook under very LOW heat.
10. Be Patient.
The process takes about an hour, give or take 15 minutes. If the tubing shows bubbles instead of a steady stream, it's a sign that the alcohol is gone. Check the viscosity by slowly lifting the lid and tilting the pot. If the liquid looks like tar or moves slowly, it's ready.
While still warm, pour your prepared mixture on the glass pane to dry out some more. Keep watch to prevent it from turning rock-hard. About one more hour should do. After that, you can store your hash oil in glass vials for a well-deserved hit.
